David Elliot Cohen's One Year Off

August 09, 2001

Nisha bought me this book as part of her anniversary gift to me. David Cohen describes how he sold his house, his cars, etc, and gave up his comfy middle-class lifestyle to take his family (wife+3 kids younger than 9) on a one-year vacation around the world. If you're convinced that having kids will cramp your lifestyle, read this. If you've ever been on a crazy family vacation, read it too.

Cohen is hardly a stellar author, but he does a great job capturing the feeling of uprooting his life and taking a monumental risk. It makes great light reading, and some parts are simply hysterical. I'm definitely recommending this to my parents.
