Real-time Pet Monitoring through Android Application and Pet Collar with Embedded Sensor

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, there has been an even increased demand in pet adoption and companionship. With this sudden boom, there were concerns for shortage of veterinary care that may have impacted the welfare of the animals. We thus came up with a solution that gives pet owners the capability to monitor their pets through their mobile devices even when away from home.

We implemented an Android application that is connected to a pet collar with an embedded Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sensor. It monitors various indices of the pet’s living environment such as temperature and humidity, and light intensity for particular pets that require a suitable amount of UVB light for their survival. It also tracks the motion status of the pet in order to evaluate the pet’s activity score and report any emergencies to its owner.

By utilizing cutting-edge technologies, we seek to serve the increased attention of petcare and support pet owners to protect their beloved pets. This application was implemented with a BLE sensor for the real-time tracking, Firebase Cloud for a secure data backup, and Android Studio (Kotlin language) to launch it as a mobile app.
