Virtual Campus Tour using Building Recognition and Augmented Reality

The term “augmented reality” (AR) refers to an interactive environment where the appearance of real-world objects are enhanced by computer-generated data. This technology finds its application in many fields such as games or online shopping as it merges digital contents into the user’s real life and creates unique user experience. As another application of AR, we proposed a virtual campus navigator that transforms a traditional 2D campus map into a 3D AR-based interactive display. Once the users use their phone cameras to view the exterior of school buildings, the system shows relevant information of the building such as building names and amenities. We added some gamification elements such as a 3D-animated character, virtual coin, and items to decorate the character. The application was built with Vuforia SDK and Unity 3D, using C# language.
