Presented is an overview of a geometric theory for parameterizing the kinematic geometry of generalized gear pairs. This generalization enables cylindrical, bevel, worm, hypoid, and non-circular gear pairs to be synthesized using a single framework. Inherent in the geometric synthesis is the simultaneous specification of cutter elements to achieve the desired gear pairs. This information includes cutter dimensions along with the corresponding motion specifications necessary to generate the desired gears. Rating of the gear pairs is achieved by evaluating reaction loads, fillet stress, contact stress, friction coefficient, minimum film thickness, and temperature rise at the contacts.
